GUIDE TO PARENTING SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Necessary parenting principles, skills and behaviors do not exist in a vacuum. The skills noted will improve parenting and, therefore, should improve child and adolescent development. As you know effective parenting is the most difficult job in the world. Parenting is not the whole story behind successful child development; however, it is a very important factor in such development.

To support ongoing development and improvement of preventive parenting skills, the noted principles range from basic to very advanced. All parents differ in their understanding and capacity to carry out preventive parenting. What may appear to be a basic skill to one parent may appear to be an advanced skill to another parent. To facilitate your progression through these skills, the following guide arranges skills from basic to very advanced.

It is recommended that you start with the basic skills and progress to more advanced skills over time. It is not a good idea to begin with a very advanced skill. Your child needs to progress from more basic to more advanced skills so as to experience success in every step. Parents need to experience the same sequence. The more early successes you experience, the more motivated you will be to complete the remaining skills.
